Give Pompeii the morning, not whatever time is left

Take an early train, enter with a route in mind and keep Vesuvius as a separate plan unless you genuinely have a full day.

Why it is worth doing

Pompeii is a city-sized archaeological site, not a quick stop. The streets, houses and sightlines toward Vesuvius become clearer when you arrive before the strongest heat and the largest groups.

How to plan it

  1. 01

Check current entry times, rules for named tickets and temporary closures on the official site.

  2. 02

Take an early Circumvesuviana or Campania Express service toward Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri.

  3. 03

Choose a short list of priority areas instead of trying to cover every open building.

  4. 04

Return to Naples after a proper visit, or add Vesuvius only with a booked time slot and realistic transport.

Local tips

  • Large bags are restricted, so travel light.
  • Shade is limited and the ancient paving is uneven.
  • Pompeii and the Vesuvius crater each deserve time. Combining both is possible, but it is not a relaxed half-day.
