Why it is worth doing
The Appian Way makes Rome feel physical. Distance, stone and landscape explain the city more clearly than another hour spent moving between crowded monuments.
How to plan it
- 01
Check current site openings and download the official park map before leaving.
- 02
Reach the road near Porta San Sebastiano or Domine Quo Vadis and start on foot or with a suitable bicycle.
- 03
Use Cecilia Metella as a first major anchor, then continue only as far as time and energy allow.
- 04
Keep a clear return plan by bus, bicycle or a pre-arranged pickup.
Local tips
- Ancient paving is rough; a standard city bike can be uncomfortable on longer sections.
- Some archaeological sites close on Mondays or may close temporarily for works.
- Carry water and sun protection because services are limited along parts of the route.
