Ride the Grand Canal like Venice's main street

Take Line 1 from the station toward San Marco after the commuter rush or in the evening, and see palaces from the water entrances they were built around.

Why it is worth doing

The Grand Canal is Venice's main street. The slow waterbus reveals façades, stops and daily movement from a perspective walking cannot provide.

How to plan it

  1. 01

Check the official AVM Venezia app and buy the right ticket before boarding.

  2. 02

Start at Ferrovia or Piazzale Roma toward Rialto and San Marco.

  3. 03

Stay aboard for the full central stretch and move only when you will not block doors or aisles.

  4. 04

Leave at Vallaresso or San Zaccaria and continue on foot.

Local tips

  • Validate your ticket before boarding.
  • Line 1 is slow and stops often, which is exactly why it works for seeing the canal.
  • Fog, high water and events can alter service, so check current ACTV notices.
